| Chicago Area Reunion? Posted: 3/16/2004 9:14:59 AM | Anybody out there check these message boards?
Loner, a well-known bon vivant from the North 'Burbs, just posted a series of intro messages on several BBSes that I used to belong to, including my own, indicating that he was not dead and wanting a reunion.
Would anybody be interested in a massive reunion party somewhere in a forest preserve (Busse Woods comes to mind) for the entire 312/773/708/630/847/815 community? Maybe something during the summer, a potluck where everybody brings a dish of some sort, some volunteers to bring grills and cook things, maybe a massive techno-swap of neat stuff, some games of Sysop Softball, maybe a few pinatas for the kiddies (I'm sure many users have had some by now).... Sound like an idea? We could cross-post it to all the BBSes in the area codes that are listed, reunite with old friends and smite old enemies....
Anybody out there paying attention and interested? I'd be willing to work as the organizer. Respond here or drop me a line. If I can get enough people willing to dedicate a little time/effort to getting the word out and/or bringing people in, maybe we can pull this off.

| RE: Chicago Area Reunion? Posted: 3/16/2004 1:47:10 PM | I think this is a very good idea, and I wish you all the success in the world with it. I think it is a very noble undertaking. On a similar note, Xpresit Net will be having it's 8th Grathering in June of this year. People can see http://www.xpresit.net for more details on this, and anyone who wants to come can. You can come also, if you'd like. Besides, if you met me in person, you'd see i'm not so bad :-) I can assure you that all of the atendees are very nice and fun-loving people. :-) The Xpresit Gathering turns out ussually 15-30 people on average. All BBS'ers, ex-BBS'ers, or friends and family of BBS'ers. I encourage everyone to attend one or both of these events, and this is a strong statement that the BBS world is STILL very much alive!
May both events turn out to be successful endeavors.

Well, why not combine the two events? I wanted to make this for everybody under the sun native to Greater Chicagoland. I don't know anything about Merrimac Park, though, or if it'd be big enough to host such a group (assuming we get the 100+ size I was hoping for). From your description, it sounds small. As I recall, Busse Woods was fairly large with lots of parking and pretty central (unless I'm thinking of another place) to the area.
If you'd rather have a separate gathering, too, that's cool. I'll work around your date if we go through with it. I'm going to see who posts/e-mails through the end of the week and if it looks like enough people are interested, I'll see what groves/dates are open at what forest preserves. In the event you do not wish to combine the events, would you still be interested in attending the All-BBS gathering? I want to see lots of people all getting together and rehashing old times...warts and all. :)

I was not aware that you were a Chicagoan. :) Cool, two peeps in a few hours, maybe we'll get some interest going.... | |

| RE: Chicago Area Reunion? Posted: 3/16/2004 9:12:30 PM | Nah, Merrimac Park will be fine. The park is huge. To give you somewhat of an idea:
It has a huge playground, the grass area is like a small forest, and it has 3 baseball fields. This is no small park. lol The park, if I had to guess, takes up half a city block or more. I mean as it says on my website, the thing has 3 parking lots. lol
To also give you another idea:
When I went to Messiah Lutheran Grade School, they had 200+ students enrolled. The ENTIRE SCHOOL would have a BBQ there once a year, and it was MORE THAN ENOUGH to accomadate everyone. 200 people, and we didn't get in anyones way or anything. lol
My only concern is that since it is a park district, we may have to pull a permit for a turnout of 50+ people. Altho the good thing about those permits is, they are cheap.
We're talking around abouts $25, and I think between you, a few others, and myself, we can more than easily pull this off if need be.
I'm broke, your broke (more than likely), and 10 million or more people in this country are broke.... but hey, $3-$5 from a few people will easily total $25.
But the 8th Annual Xpresit Net Gathering will more than welcome anyone who would like to attend, even if they've never even so much as heard of Xpresit Net :-)
If you want to combine events, i'm totally up for it.
As far as the forest preserve -- been there, done that, and theres several problems with it:
#1 - Hauling all of the groceries and things over there
#2 - You still need a permit for that many people at a forest preserve (trust me, i've checked into this)
The Park District permits are cheaper, not to mention, Merrimac Park has a Jewel-Osco right accross the street from the park in Dunning Square Mall. Which simply means, only one car will be detained for about a half hour to go pick up the food, and will only have a 60 second drive (if that) to and from the park each way :-)
Trust me, after 8 years of experimentation, i've found the best way to do it. I'm no newbie when it comes to the easiest way to have a gathering.
But I will be more than happy to combine forces with you on this event, and should you agree with all this, will even state as much on the website.
Not to mention, Omega BBS always has BBS Gatherings to this day also, and I can talk to the folks at Omega and see what they think about this whole thing (altho chances are, alot of the Omega folks are reading this anyways).
But if we can make this the biggest BBS Gathering in Chicagoland BBS Scene History, then hey -- LETS DO IT! :-)

| RE: Chicago Area Reunion? Posted: 3/16/2004 9:35:49 PM | I just gave Rinaldo a call, and he is all for helping out with this and making the exsisting Omega regulars aware of the situation. He will be posting the link to this thread on his BBS, so with any luck, we'll be getting alot more peoples input on this.

Well as long as I can either get a ride or if it's accessible to CTA, I'm in. :)

Blue Line to Irving Park Station. Irving Bus to the Park :-)

| RE: Chicago Area Reunion? Posted: 3/19/2004 4:12:15 PM | I'm interested.. should we drag in some ddialers as well? I'm in contact with some of them, at least half-assedly.
I'll bring a pinata, a baseball, bat and glove, and some beer.
I'm good like that.

Yep... whatever anyone can do. This will be the 8th Xpresit Net Gathering so far being held, and LCN had the idea of turning it into a full blown Chicagoland Reunion, and I got no problems with that at all :-)
Details on http://www.xpresit.net
I've emailed her about it further, and am waiting for a reply back, and see what ideas and such she has in mind.
But we figure why have 2 medium sized gatherings when we can have one full blown big one? Makes sense, at least I think so.
I hope this has a really awesome turnout. I've also talked to Rinaldo of Omega BBS, and he's trying to get the word out.
Xpresit Gatherings are ussually 15-30 people and Omega Gatherings are about the same... so lets see if we can get this reunion gathering at 80+ :-) Wouldn't that be awesome :-)
I've gotta post the link to this forum on xpresit.net ... might be a good idea hehe.

Hey now, that rocks! I thought TDH went down but it's good to see em still alive nad kicking!
Man, i wonder how many people are gonna jump this bandwagon? Hehehe. This is starting to be really cool :-)
Oh and special thanks to Nullvalue for linking to this in his newsletter :-)

| RE: Chicago Area Reunion? Posted: 3/22/2004 10:23:30 PM | Sounds like a good idea. If it's on a day when I'm not on call then we will probably be there. Most of the Cove'rs that were local seldom log on anymore but I'll mass mail the board when you have details. I think about 25 or 30 local people still check their email here.

| RE: Chicago Area Reunion? Posted: 3/23/2004 10:44:10 PM | For everyone planning to attend or hoping to attend, please goto: http://www.bbsmates.com/viewreunion.asp?id=1 to register on the guest list that Nullvalue has created for us. Of course filling this out is not a requirement for attendance, but its to give us a general idea of the possible turnout. Also, if you are bringing any friends or family, please list them as well. We would like a general idea of how many people plan on going, and we especially need to know if a park permit might be needed for the event, and filling this out will definately help us determine that.

We already have the details, and they are listed all throughout this thread. Please see http://www.bbsmates.com/viewreunion.asp?id=1 for further details. Thanks.
